History

The business has its origins in a company which was founded by Jack Bateman in 1941 as Factory Canteens Limited and which subsequently became known as Bateman Catering. Bateman Catering and Midland Catering were acquired by Grand Metropolitan in 1967 and 1968 respectively. A management buy-out from Grand Metropolitan followed in 1987 when the Compass group was formed. The Company was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1988.

In July 2000 the Company merged with Granada but then demerged again in February 2001.

Compass Corruption scandals

The Compass Group was involved in a corruption scandal with its subsidiary Eurest Support Services winning contracts to provide food to United Nation peacekeepers in Liberia. The value of Compass’s food contracts with the United Nation is valued at$237 million, with renewals and add-ons that could reach $351 million.

The UN procurement officer and the head of the UN committee for Administrative and Budgetary issues were arrested and indicted after talking close to $1 million in bribes from Compass. Peter Harris, the head of the UK & Ireland Middle East and Africa division of Compass, and two other employees involved with the Un contracting were removed.

Eurest Support Services (ESS) first came to wide public light after being embroiled in the multibillion-dollar United Nations procurement scandal. ESS used a broker company to get United Nations procurement contracts with the use of corruption of the U.N.

Official Alexander Yakovlev (UN procurement). It was also investigated by the Congress of the United States House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform for its role in contracting arrangements in providing dining services to the US Army in Iraq as subcontractor to Halliburton subsidiary subsidiary KBR.

While employees at multinational oil producers in Algeria relax in air-conditioned shelters, workers at a catering contractor that serves them swelter in tents in the desert. The workers, employed by a subsidiary of the multinational Compass Group, have shifts that last six weeks without a day off.

They decided to create a union in 2006, but management disputed the union’s legitimacy despite initial support from 1,400 workers out of 1,800. They refused to permit meetings on company property, allowed by law.

The union collapsed. Worse yet, the company and its subcontractor have tried to make an example of the union’s elected general secretary, Yassin Zaid. His work contract was suspended, and he faces charges for “slander on the internet.” He lives in fear of further reprisals. The independent Algerian union SNAPAP is asking supporters to pressure the company to abandon legal proceedings against Zaid and to reinstate him—and to cease interfering with the union.
